Journal Club
Journal Club is where our reading and our discussion meet. In our e-library we keep a running collection of what is new in intensive care — trials, major articles, systematic reviews and guidelines — so that members do not have to go hunting for them. And we sit down together online, regularly through the year, to take one of them apart — unhurried and in depth, the way a paper deserves.
The bedside question
Does this paper change our practice in intensive care?
Every month brings new trials, new guidelines and endless commentary — but very little of it should change what happens at the bedside. That is the standard we hold every paper to.
We go through the design, the numbers and the limitations together. We weigh the strengths of a study against its flaws to decide whether the findings genuinely warrant a change in our everyday care. Reading a paper well is a clinical skill like any other, and it is easier to learn in company than alone.

How Journal Club runs
Who can attend?
Every ESBICM member. There is nothing separate to apply for — if you are a member, you can come.
When do sessions happen?
Regularly through the year. Each session is announced with its date and IST start time under Events in your member panel, so you can convert it to your own time zone.
How do I join a session?
Through your member panel or The ICU App — the joining details appear with the session listing.
What happens in a session?
We take one paper and work through it properly: what was asked, what was found, and what it means for the patients in our own units. The discussion matters more than the slides, and disagreement is welcome — it is usually where the learning is.
Do I need to read the paper beforehand?
It helps, but it is not expected. The paper is in the e-library ahead of the session, and the discussion is built so that someone arriving straight from a shift can still follow it.
Can I suggest a paper?
Yes — post it in the Community section of The ICU App, where faculty and fellow members can see it.
Are sessions recorded?
We record and share sessions whenever we can, though not every one. When a recording is available, Plus members can watch it in the member panel at any time.
