For a new resident who has recently been posted to ICU or anyone who wants to start reading in Intensive Care, the first thing comes to mind is ‘which book(s) to read?’.
There are many detailed articles available on net for the same, but here we are posting our simple recommendation which we found useful.
1. The ICU Book by Paul Marino – A must read for anyone new to ICU
This book is very basic but the content in it should be known by anyone working in ICU. It can’t be used to manage the system wise complications but this book forms the base of ICU environment. The general chapters of the book are a must must read
2. Oh’s Intensive Care Manual – The standard textbook for ICU
This book is we call as a standard text for ICU. The book is neither too long nor too short, it’s a perfect balance to be used as a textbook which can be read from starting to end. Few chapters are not so elaborated, but its ok. You can always look for them in reference text.
3. Washington manual of Critical care – The Lab-coat book
This is my personal favorite. It’s a book which should in your ICU chamber, your lab-coat all the time. The book as an algorithmic approach which comes very useful in ICU. Most of the chapters have algorithms which runs in mind whether you are managing the patient beside or giving a viva exam.
4. Irwin rippe’s Intensive Care medicine Textbook– The reference book
This is a phenomenal book which covers every ICU topic in detail. Also this books give you detailed concepts of the current evidences and practices. If you want to go into detail of any topic, read this. In spite of being a reference text, the language used in very simple.
